Kids Makeup & Clutch Purse - the Perfect Party Favor

It’s my daughter’s birthday in a few weeks and I’m dreading it this year. I happen to be a mother who doesn’t let her children have a birthday party every year. At our house, parties happen every three years starting at six. I absolutely dread the years my kids have parties. I don’t like anything about them. To me it’s just 8-10 more kids running around in reckless abandon regardless of the time and effort I put into fun and games. Maybe this year will be different because until now, I’ve only had boy parties.

My daughter happens to have a really great group of girl friends and they all think they are princesses. In fact, at church, it was an all-girl primary class until a year ago a boy moved in—heaven forbid. The girls were in an uproar until the teacher explained to them that their “prince” had arrived. Needless to say, we are having a princess party complete with little girls’ makeup fun! I’m most excited about the mess-free makeup factor and the children's clutch-purse kit will make the perfect party favor.

Little Girls Love Makeup and Mini-Play Makeup is Mess-Free!

If there is one thing I understand about little girls is that they love makeup! It’s so rewarding to see my daughter’s friends light up whenever they see the pretend makeup my daughter carries around. This reinforces to me that “It’s a good thing”—if I might borrow a quip from Martha Stewart! And they don’t care at all that it’s pretend makeup. Just like the pretend food they cook with - it completely stokes their imagination. They play with the pretend makeup for hours and since it’s 100% mess-free, I’m 100% worry free. It’s amazing how liberating little girls’ makeup time can be when you aren’t hovering to protect your furniture, carpets or anything else that falls victim to the “real” stuff.

Alas, the party will go on in a couple of weeks. There certainly will be plenty of girly-girl things to do. I can just hear the high-pitched squeals of eight little girls dressed up in their frilly dress up scurrying to find a little corner of the bathroom mirror to put on their princess face with their little girls’ makeup. Clutch in hand, brushes unleashed, and little girls nail polish uncapped—they only have until 12:00 - PM that is. Let the party begin!

And then she said she was pretending

“And then she said she was pretending…”

That’s not just a clever lyric from an Eric Clapton song, but also the apparent bylaws that my daughter lives by. Unless, of course, she is accusing her brother of hitting her--then, it’s always on purpose. However, when she hits him, it’s always an “accident” because she was just “pretending”.

But, I digress. In a child’s world, the art of pretending is fast becoming a lost art. Studies show that we have structured our kids’ time so much, that they are beginning to lose the ability to use their imaginations. A very concerning situation indeed. Psychology studies also show that children at 3 years old have tremendous imaginations, but only 4 short years later, the same studies show that we have somehow removed the bulk of that imagination from them. They conclude it is through the process of parents telling them “no” and “don’t.” We usually do that to protect them or because we’re tired, but if we are not careful, between structuring their time too tightly and stifling their experimentation, we can suck the pretend right out of them.

So, what is to be done? We all want the best for our children. Our motives are pure--for the most part. We all get tired. We all want to develop our kids. Perhaps we’re overdoing it? Those same studies suggest that kid’s need time to pretend in an unstructured manner. They need to see the images in the clouds as they roll by. They need to be able to smell that imaginary bread baking. They need to wear mom’s shoes and prance around in front of the mirror. They need to have that serious chat with their imaginary husband. And, in our case, they need to pretend putting on makeup. The kind of makeup that allows total freedom of imagination and the reality of zero mess!

Why is this type of play so critical? To ensure they maintain that healthy imagination that is so vital to healthy adult life later on.

Two of our family values are to work together and play together. I’ll save stories about our working together for another time when I can actually find an experience worth sharing. My husband and I have decided one of our “play” activities for our family was that we would have season passes at the local ski resort here in Southern Idaho. In March 2010 my family and I were enjoying a sunny day on the slopes one Saturday. We had taken several runs. The kids were doing pretty well, the whining was minimal, and we had just finished our lunch on the deck where we enjoyed the sunshine and watched skiers coming down the mountain from several different runs.
While we were doing the ski boot shuffle walk from the lodge to where our skis and poles were leaning on a rack amongst dozens of others, I saw a woman who I recognized. She walked up and surprisingly, there was no small talk. The first words out of her mouth were “I need to get one of your makeup kits for my daughter. She absolutely destroyed my makeup the other day by getting into it and trying to put it on. She was a mess, the bathroom was a mess, and my makeup,,, well, I have to replace it.”

I certainly understand where she is coming from. One of my motivations for creating pretend makeup was to avoid the mess that is created when my daughter attempted to apply the real thing. It’s natural for our daughters to want to grow up and be like their mothers, at least prior to their teen years, and one of the ways they do that is in copying what they see us do. Dressing in her clothes, putting on her shoes and walking around the house with that silly smile and swagger.
Pretending at applying makeup is no different. The risk of mess and damage to furniture is a bit higher when it comes to applying makeup when you are aged 3 to 10… Which is precisely why we made our play makeup out of materials that look and feel like the real thing, but are not real. It allows our daughters to not grow up too quickly while enabling them to mimic their moms in a safe, clean and repeatable way. She get’s to pretend, mom get’s to not be concerned about a mess. It’s win-win.

Is this real Makeup?
No, it’s not real… although we love the fact that concerned mothers ask this question. Even after knowing this, they touch it and immediately look at their finger tips to see if any has rubbed off. One of our goals was to make Mini-Play Makeup® look and feel real. We get this question so often that we consider it an indicator of success. Rest assured it's 100% fake, making it 100% Mess-Free Makeup!

What is it made of?
Because we have a patent pending, we can’t answer that directly. However, many of our customers figure it out when they take a close look because we often use common materials that you probably have in your home right now. All materials are hypallergenic. Please read our blog post about our kids fake-makeup for a further explanation.

Do you have a recommended age range for little girls with this product?
Yes we do. Between the ages 3 to 9 are the optimal age for Little Girls playing with Mini-Play Makeup. As long as your child is still pretending, she will love to pretend with our makeup. We do not recommend younger than 3 years because there are small parts and you run the risk of a choking hazard.

Is this made in America?
Mini-Play Makeup is assembled in the United States. We would prefer that all of our components come from the US as well, but we have not been able to find a supplier for all of the components within the US. As such some of our components come from other countries, including China. We currently are having our products tested to reassure you that there are no harmful substances. However, we are confident that our products are safe as many of the components have been in the children's craft market for years.

Does any color show up on her skin? I'm concerned that my daughter will be disappointed when she realizes that she won't see color on her skin, nails or lips.
You are not the first person to think that your daughter will be disappointed if she doesn’t see rosy pink on her cheeks. Our play makeup can be compared to pretend food. We offer pretend food to our children and they play for hours imagining themselves making gourmet magic in the kitchen and yet they can’t eat it. Although there is obviously time for your daughter to help with real food preparation such as making cookies, it’s not something you would probably feel comfortable leaving her on her own to do without supervision. Mini-Play Makeup has the same philosophy when it comes to children’s makeup. There is a time for real makeup—something that will actually show up on skin, but when you don’t want to have to supervise or worry about furniture, carpets or clothing getting destroyed while she’s playing, Mini-Play Makeup is the perfect solution. It will not transfer to skin at all, but provides hours of realistic play. We provide the most realistic fake makeup on the market and while other makeup is marketed as “fake” it’s actually real (transfers to the skin). Our makeup is 100% fake (no transfer to the skin), but looks and feels real to the touch.

Has Your Daughter Ever Done Something Like This?

Mini-Play Makeup® is makeup for kids that was created by a stay-at-home mom that wanted to give her only daughter a realistic play-makeup experience. But more importantly, a makeup experience that wouldn't destroy furniture, carpets or clothing, and be believable enough to keep her from getting into her own makeup. When she couldn't find any fake makeup that was realistic enough to convince her daughter it was real, she decided to create her own. After nine months of research and experimentation, Mini-Play Makeup® was born.

You and Your Child will Love Mess-Free Makeup!

"I wanted a pretend makeup kit that my daughter could play with without me worrying about her getting it all over the place! I love that she can mimic me putting on makeup and yet there’s not a thing to wash off her face. It's 100% mess-free makeup! One of the greatest things about this toy makeup is that it is so realistic, my daughter no longer gets into my makeup. Mini-Play Makeup® is a gift to my daughter as well as yours--creating real-life play for her and peace of mind for you! I hope the little girl in your life enjoys it as much as mine has."
